As Lemon attorneys, we get questions all the time about what cars people should buy. Well, we don’t know. But we do know that all cars have problems, and any — even the allegedly ‘best’ ones — can easily end up as lemons. 

2008 Toyota PriusJust look, for instance, at the problems already reported to NHTSA on the 2008 Toyota Prius, which was voted as the Top Green Car by Consumer Reports:

  • Headlights work intermittently (8 complaints)
  • Battery died because the vehicle sat for more than ten days; manufacturer states that battery cables should be disconnected when the vehicle sits for 7-10 days (2 complaints)
  • Seat belts disengaged and air bags did not deploy in a crash (3 complaints)
  • Flexible gas tank fails to fill all the way to full in cold weather (gas nozzle clicks off)
  • ABS skid control relays failed, causing brake failure (4 complaints)
  • Master cylinder failure
  • Stalled without warning
  • Battery level dropped quickly while in heavy traffic
  • Vehicle accelerated while brake depressed (3 complaints)
  • Musty smell coming from air conditioner
  • CD track menu doesn’t display
  • Steering system failure
  • Rodent chewed through one of the fuel lines
  • Emergency spare tire causes the traction control system to engage
  • Gas nozzle doesn’t fit into gas tank opening
  • Sidwall tire blowout
  • Vehicle moved from side to side while being driven
